The master cylinder of the 10 is the same as the R1 XC brake. It's a super light slimline twin-bolt cutaway clamp flip-flop forged unit complete with lightweight alloy bolt kit as standard and even an optional carbon leaver upgrade for an extra ?86.95. The one piece forged calliper houses oversized 24mm diameter pistons with top loading pads and an adjustable angle hose rose for snug fitting. Bleeding them needs patience and tightening the soft bolts needs care, but otherwise it's a surprisingly tough piece.

The end result is outstanding too. For a start it's only 15g heavier than the R1, which is the lightest 180mm brake we've tested this year, which makes it fit for racing, never mind trail use.

Despite that it's one of the most powerful brakes available, matching even the heaviest four-pot gravity anchors for G pulling grunt on trail or dyno to the point where we had to warn testers to be careful before their first runs. While the squeezy feel from the leaver isn't always popular at first, the superb control and modulation levels available - particularly through the mid stroke - rapidly converted any of our doubters within a few descents. We've run them through full seasons in Whistler and savage weeks in Sierra Nevada without any heat or fade issues and pad life is fine as long as they're bedded in properly. Now that they're distributed by Silverfish, spares should be more readily available too.
