Onza Ibex FR 120TPI 2.25in

Score - 9/10

Memories of the white Porcupine tyre of the Nineties came flooding back when we saw the Onza logo on the sidewall, but thankfully the similarities end there. In fact, we highly rated the Greiner mud tyre in last month's issue. For the Ibex, Onza has obviously taken inspiration from the original Maxxis High Roller. A familiar strip of central paddles is paired up with sturdy edge-knobs and combined with a supple 120TPI casing.

Our first encounter with the Ibex was aboard the BMC Trailfox TF01 Carbon earlier in the year, a test conducted in mid-winter on freeze-dried trails. We were very impressed; it blew away any prejudices we'd harboured over the last 20 years. The first thing to note about the Ibex is that it boasts an impressive turn of speed.

We have a feeling this is predominantly a result of the shallower tread depth compared to the Maxxis and Specialized, because we actually measured the durometer at a softer-than-advertised 52a. In dry conditions and on hardpack, the Ibex accelerates quickly and its superb cornering grip makes it easy to maintain speed through the twisty stuff. When it does start to let go, the breakaway is less progressive than on the High Roller II, but when it's bone-dry and rock-hard, the Ibex has more grip.

The flipside is its performance in soft loam and wet conditions, where sadly there just isn't the purchase of its rivals. Don't expect the Ibex to last as long as the other tyres either; its 120TPI casing was showing signs of wear by the end of our test.
