The EVOC bike bag has just picked up another award for its high performance and quality. This time UK based magazine Privateer have given the bike travel bag their converted 'Recommended' badge along with a very glowing review. Check the review out here

There are two schools of thought when it comes to travelling with a bike: either go as cheap as possible with a bike box, typically free from a local bike shop; or invest a significant amount of money in a quality bike bag.

I've used both in my time, and honestly, the humble bike box has never let me down. However, when I was travelling to the US for our California issue in April, the thought of a panicked final day trying to find a bike shop that would give me a suitable box really didn't appeal, so I took the plunge and acquired a EVOC bike bag direct from the UK distributor Silverfish.

It's an impressive piece of kit for sure - it folds up relatively small to take up minimal space in the back of a car or in a hotel room, but once the reinforcing poles are inserted, it acquires a good level of structural integrity in all the vital places (i.e. around the wheels).

Inside there are numerous straps to keep detached parts from floating about, pads to act as spacers (eg, below the chainstays to keep the chainring from grounding out in the bottom of the bag) and padded wraps for elements like the forks. It's well thought out and the instructions included make it idiot proof.

Once the bike was packed up safely (my 29in wheels fit the wheel compartments easily), and a selection of other kit thrown in to bring it up to the weight limit (if you're paying an additional $200 each way, you may as well go as heavy as possible, right?), actually moving it around, from station to airport to hire car, was actually surprisingly easy thanks to the widely spaced roller wheels and well positioned hand straps - in the past I've borrowed bags that drag along the ground when using the proper hand straps, which isn't great.

Three months and a couple more international trips later, this EVOC bag doesn't look any the worse for wear - something we definitely wouldn't be saying of a bike box.

If you're a regular traveller an EVOC bike bag is a great investment - even if you bought one between a group of friends. It will last for years, works better than any of the competition we've used and has kept our bikes safe. All of which makes it good value for money. Recommended.
