With a 77mm rear flange diameter, the first thing you clock on the E Thirteen wheel set is the huge, carbon-bodied hubs. The chubby central shell is made from a carbon lay-up to save weight; with aluminium flanges for better tensioning of the 28 spokes used front and rear. Inside, oversized angular contact bearings help deal with sideways loading generated by cornering. The Freehub offers a 60-Point (6 degree) engagement with a pawl and ratchet system that's one of the loudest we've encountered. Swapping out the interchangeable gold-anodised end caps allows for different axle standards.

E Thirteen chooses a deep-section, custom-profile, Exalite+ rim with a 21mm internal width. A mixture of scandium and aluminium is used, for increased strength, and the rims weigh 372g each. The deeper rim shape and oversized flanges mean spoke length can be shorter, which provides better vertical compliance and more lateral rigidity as well as less peak-spoke stress - whereby the spokes 'wind up' under pedalling and braking forces.

The TRS+ system isn't UST compatible, so you need to install the provided glue-backed rim strips to run them tubeless - this isn't a big deal and our Maxxis LUST tyres seated easily and ran with zero issues.

The E Thirteen TRS+ felt great from the first ride. The wheels offer a near instantaneous pick-up, making them feel urgent and responsive. Thanks, presumably, to the short spokes and lack of rotating mass they lurch forward under hard cranking and get up to speed really quickly.

As well as boasting the best acceleration on test, they are also super-stiff laterally, which helps when you're moving the bike around underneath you in corners or dodging trail obstacles. In fact, a tell-tale sign of this stiffness manifested itself when the rear tyre squired more (at the same pressures) on one particular fast, flat corner.

Thankfully, due to the wider spoke angle, the wheels offer great vertical compliance and feel comfortable to boot - which makes for a great package, albeit a very expensive one.
