UK Bike magazine MBR review Formula's badass brake, in this months Mag (June 2011), check the full review. Like the old Formula Oro, the forged aluminium lever blade on the One is flat, wide and doesn't table along its length but it's still comfortable in use. Our sample came fitted with tool-free reach adjustment, interesting called IRA (instant reach adjustment). It's a nice feature but since the original Allen bolt is easy to get to on the front of the lever and not tucked away inside, I don't see this as that much of an upgrade. Especially since I've been running it maxed out with the lever as close as possible to the handlebar. I've also noticed the lever blade bottoms out with a slight click when it pushes into the master cylinder.

Also mounted to the sample was a set of FCS (feeling control system) adjusters. Think of these as freestroke (or bite point) adjusters that also affect how firm the lever feels. The FCS has a good range of adjustment but I ran the barrel adjusters fully open, which is how the brakes would fel without them fitted.

Like Avid and others, this lever body features a split clamp where one bold is tightened fully before the second blt is nipped up to even out clamping pressure. To save precious grams Formula specs aluminium bolts but I'm not a fan. True, you might fit and forget but I like steel bolts to do this job. The clamps can be replaced with a set of Mixmaster clamps allowing SRAM shifter pods to be mounted directly to the brake, eliminating a clamp and saving yet more weight. They also come with aluminium bolts.

The caliper is a forged one-piece design and features larger diameter 24mm pistons (most caliper pistons are 22mm) and new top-loading brake pads. The latter are held in place by a simple Allen bolt and pad changes are quick and stress free. With the stock organic pads there's a bit of squeal but it's no worse than most.

There's always a trade off making the pistons bigger and in the case of Formula it comes in the form of slightly less rotor clearance and pad retraction. On the work stand I couldn't get the brakes to spin without rubbing so I thought I'd get them centred, hammered them and then reset the pistons after a couple of weeks. This seemed to work because they loosened up enough to run noise free, while the pads are still going strong after five months.

Power delivery is very even. They're not grabby and the power they generate is very impressive. The hooked lever does feel a little awkward as the lever arcs into the bar but there's not the dead travel you get with some radial pistons designs.
